The V500 is a new golf GPS from Sonocaddie. It might be a cliche to say that this or that model has it all; but it might be true in this case, so I will say it anyway. The Sonocaddie V500 GPS really does have it all: satellite images and video flyover, a touchscreen with Touch Point Positioning, the ability to mark your own points, a digital scorecard and game analysis software, and a Track Your Game feature that shows you every shot you make. Throw in the fact that it is preloaded with all available basic maps in your country (over 15,000 in the US), and you get a golf GPS device that is truly at the head of the pack. (Normally, the advanced maps with satellite imagery and video flyovers would cost you extra, but if you join the membership before June 30, 2010, Sonocaddie is will give you 15 course downloads for free.)

New Golf GPS Devices From GolfDigest

GolfDigest is one the top golf magazines; it is chalked full of golf stories, equipment reviews, and golf tips (you know, each month they give you all the surefire tips that promise to take umpteenth strokes off your game). I have no idea how many of those tips I’ve tried; but I do know that if they worked just a fraction of the time, I should now be shooting in the 60′s. Needless to say I’m not.

Of course, I’m just being facetious. Most golf tips are great; and GolfDigest does a great job of helping amateur golfers with their game. But now, instead of giving tips and information to help your golf game, they are offering you two new golf GPS devices: a standalone golf GPS and a smartphone app.

Whistler GLF-100 Golf GPS

This is a very simple golf GPS device (see picture above), not unlike the popular iGolf Neo, that gives only the distances to the front, center, and back of each green. It may not have fancy features like aerial images, video flyovers, or a touchscreen display (it doesn’t even give distances to any of the hazards); but it is much cheaper than SkyCaddie or the Callaway uPro.

The GolfDigest Mobile Phone Golf GPS works on various phone models used on the AT&T Wireless Network. This is also a fairly simple golf GPS application. The GolfDigest GPS pinpoints your location on a color map of the course and gives you the distance to the front, center and back of the green. As you approach the green, it zooms in to give a closeup view of the hole.

The GolfDigest golf GPS costs $5.99 per month. This price includes access to all available maps.

Palm Pre Golf GPS Apps

If you have an iPhone, you have a huge assortment of golf GPS apps at your fingertips; if you are using a Palm Pre, on the other hand, you don’t have a lot to chose from. Hopefully, developers will get on the Palm Pre bandwagon (the Palm Pre bandwagon may not be ready to depart just yet, but you never know), and start creating quality golf GPS apps. Right now there are a few good apps to chose from; whether they will ever become as popular as some of their counterparts for the iPhone remains to be seen. So here are four apps that you might try.

IntelliGolf Eagle. The IntelliGolf Eagle “OTA” edition will work on the Palm Pre if you have MotionApps’ “Classic mode” software installed. (See the Intelligolf’s website for details.) Intelligolf Eagle edition includes satellite GPS, shot tracking, statistics and graphs, scorecard, sidegame wagers, and boasts a whopping 26,000 courses in its database. You can download a fully functional free trial that you can use for three rounds of golf. So make to give it a go before you buy. Only $29.99.

FreeCaddie. With the free version you only get the distances to the front, center, and back of greens. Enough to get by (and certainly enough to see if you like it enough to buy). To get features you really want like distances to bunkers and hazards, a shot distance function, the ability to map your own points, or statistics and score keeping, then you will will have to spend $24.95 to upgrade to FreeCaddie Pro. This is still not a bad price. There are over 14,000 courses available and you can map your own with FreeCaddie’s Course Creator.

GolfPinFinder is a golf GPS app that give’s you distances to the front, center and back of the green, tee box, and up to 5 custom points per hole. It uses courses from the BBGPSGolf database; there are about 8500 course currently available. If your course is not there, you can easily use the BBGPSGolf course creator to add it to the database. This can be a blessing in disguise. You might be a bit peeved that it is not there (it is after all a $9.99 app); but if you map the course yourself, you will have it exactly the way you want it. Anyway, you can try it free for 14 days, plenty of time to decide if its something you want to buy.

Golf Caddie. Golf Caddie supplies the standard distances to the front, center, and back of each green, as well as five custom points per hole. You can mark the distances of your shot, keep score for up to four players, track your handicap, and keep track of statistics like total putts, greens in regulation, and fairways hit. It also uses the course database at BBGPSGolf and is also $9.99 at the Palm App Catalog.

Apple Launches GolfPlan for iPad

A good golf GPS device will give you accurate yardages on the course; however, knowing the correct yardage is not enough to make you a better golfer. It matters not one wit that you know it’s 140 yards to the center of the green, if you are not confident that you can hit the ball anywhere near that distance. You might not even know what club to use. Can a golf GPS help? Most golf GPS devices can also record statistics from your round like fairways hit, greens in regulation, and putts per round. This feedback can help you find the areas that you need to improve.

But what do you do with the statistical information when you get it? The new iPad app GolfPlan can help. Using instructional videos supplied by Paul Azinger, GolfPlan can take look at your statistical information gathered by GolfShot and suggest drills to improve the five key areas of game improvement: driving, greens in regulation, scrambling, recovery and putting. Even if you are not a GolfShot user, the GolfPlan app can use your handicap to offer the same type of assistance.

Searching the internet for information these days can be a daunting, and sometimes frustrating, experience. Yes, there are lots of websites on every imaginable topic, and every search query can yield millions of results. But amongst the multitude of desired websites, countless other, less useful sites, will pop up to clutter the search results. You need a way to separate the wheat from the chaff.
