BBGPSGolf: A Free BlackBerry Golf Gps Application
BBGPSGolf (Blackberry GPS Golf) is a free golf GPS application for the BlackBerry smartphone. Now you might not expect too much from a free application, but this one has many of the features of the top brands. No, there are no fancy graphics or professionally mapped courses (you may have to map them yourself using Google Maps), but what it can do makes it a promising addition to the growing list of golf gps applications:
- It can measure the distance to the front, middle and back of the green, and up to 5 additional custom locations per hole (if you map the course yourself, you can choose any 5 points you wish)
- It can keep track of your score
- It has the ability to measure the distance of shots and record the club used
- It will record score, shot, game and more information into an online database to analyse your performance at a later date
- You can map a golf course from the handheld if the golf course is not in the online database
- Auto hole advance
- It works with internal GPS or with an external BlueTooth puck
- There are currently about 9000 courses in its database

Since there are a fairly limited number of mapped courses, you may have to map your own course. You might consider this a daunting task, but it is really not that difficult. The following video will guide you through the process. (Note that once you have mapped a course it is ready to download: there is no need to get it approved.)
There is an accompanying BlackBerry application by the same developer called Golf Distance that will calculate the average distance of shots from individual clubs. Hit a bunch of balls with a club, mark the start location and finish location of each ball and the application will automatically calculate the minimum, average, and maximum distances. These average distance can then be entered into the BBGPSGolf application so that it can recommend the right club to use on each shot.
