If you are looking for a bare-bones golf GPS that requires minimal setup and operation, then you need look no further than the Swami 1500 from Izzo Golf. And it is, indeed, a very simple, small device that automatically displays the usual (and essential) distances of the front, center, and back of the green. It does this with large, easy to read numbers. In terms of functionality, that’s about it; however, with a retail price of $149.99 it is the least expensive GPS unit on the market. The only drawback may be the initial (one-time) $35.00 fee to access over 12,000 mapped U.S. courses. Now, you might be thinking that $35 is not that bad a price considering there is no annual membership fee; but, with only the distances to the front, center, and back of the green available, it does seem like a lot to pay for “maps” that some other gps units offer for free (in fact, with no graphical display on the Swami 1500, you are only paying for distance calculation and not maps). Nonetheless, at roughly half the cost of most other golf GPS units, it may well be worth a try.
