In Search of SkyKap

Golf GPS rangefinders are great to use. Some, like the GolfLogix GPS-8, are hands free devices that give you the yardages automatically as you make your way along the golf course: no need to fiddle with buttons. The Calloway uPro even has a voice recognition feature that will respond to the golfer’s commands. And some smartphone applications, like the GreenFinder GPS, will call out the distance to the center of the green: no need to even look at your Blackberry to get the yardage. But wouldn’t it be great to have a golf GPS device that will listen to your voice commands and sound out the yardages so that there would be no need to touch the device or look at it all? Way back in February of 2007 (a long time ago in the hi-tech world) the golf blogosphere was abuzz with the announcement of such a device. It is called the SkyKap Advisor, and true to its name, it is embedded in the brim of the golfer’s hat and advises the golfer on the distances to the dangers that lie ahead. It speaks in response to voice commands: the golfer’s hat can talk to him/her “just like a tour caddie”. Fantastic!

And here is the promotional video for this amazing golf GPS.

Alas, it has been well over two years, and the SkyKap Advisor is nowhere in sight; however, the manufacturers, SkyKap LLC, are still in business, and you can visit their website to get more information and demos.
